  • NaNoWriMo 2017 – Day 12

1716 words. 20015 words total.  A little under an hour.  Not bad.  Especially since I started pretty late, after having chatted and played some Destiny.

    What helped today:

Chatting with my homeboy gave me the inspiration for the essay I went on to write.

    What I discovered today:

I can write tired, but I shouldn’t make a habit out of it.  I didn’t end up feeling bad, but I do wonder how much better I could have done had I written earlier.

    What else was good:

Squeezy fruit.  And the SSD for my Chromebook was delivered around 7:30.  So, I went and picked it up, came back, put it and the rest of the Chromebook’s guts back inside.  Fired up the Chromebook and it recovered.  Success.  I’ve been letting it just sit and run since then.  The last time I thought I’d recovered it, I was working one minute and then the next, I see it asking again for a recovery disk.  So, to be sure that the new SSD held up and there wasn’t some larger issue that may have caused the previous SSD to fail, I’ve just been letting it sit.  I’ll do the same for some time tomorrow and after that, if all goes well, I’ll slip it back into its place in my workflow.

  • NaNoWriMo 2017 – Day 11

1055 words. 18299 words total. The subject matter got to me around 950 words. Plus, my lower back began hurting. Also, it was Saturday night and I’m sure that 12 hours after I post this, I’ll have another 2000 words to add. I’ll be over 20000 words. That, or I’m sure I’ll have eaten some more squeezy fruit. I can pretty much guarantee the latter.

    What helped today:

    Nothing, really.

    What I discovered today:

Environment helps me with my writing. And I really hope it helps tomorrow, as my average words per day has slipped just below 1667.

    What else was good:

My Chromebook should be fixed by the time I kick out these new words. At least I hope so. Amazon texted and emailed me and told me that the new SSD was late arriving. They never texted me again to tell me it was delivered, so it’s out there in the world, waiting to power my machine. Hopefully it’s delivered by the time I’m ready to pick it up. I still plan to use my netbook to write, though.

  • NaNoWriMo 2017 – Day 9

1712 words. 15975 words total. No poem. I’m going to be seriously playing catch-up over the weekend. It’s good, though. I just need to take time to sequester myself and get it done.

I started earlier than I did last night, but not as early as I would have preferred. It’s cool, though. I got it done.
    What helped today:
Spending some real quality time talking to my mentor. Talking about the future and the different things coming together to make it better. And others telling me how talented they think I am. I appreciate the sentiment and the belief in me.
    What I discovered today:
How ready I am to move forward. How do I know? Because there’s a lot of fear. The question is, what is behind that?
    What else was good:
Flatbread pizza with turkey pepperoni. Soon, it’ll be something with beef chorizo. Probably some kind of pasta or casserole. That, I’m really looking forward to.
  • NaNoWriMo 2017 – Day 8

1210 words. 14263 words total. No poem. I started very late again. After midnight. I’m still considering it Day 8. Not that it matters. Only 50k after 30 days, counts.

Lots of distractions. Still showed up. That’s the important thing.

    What helped today:

Remembering why I’m doing this to begin with.

    What I discovered today:

Just how deeply the fear goes.

    What else was good:

Some really good podcast listening while on the road.

  • NaNoWriMo 2017 – Day 7

1740 words in a little over 2 hours. 13053 words total. No poem. I started very late again. I’m anticipating starting earlier tomorrow. At least I hope so.

I used my netbook for the day’s writing. Linux Mint with the latest version of LibreOffice. The keyboard is smaller than the machines I mostly use these days, but I got through it with minimal problems. I kept somehow moving the cursor accidentally, but not so much that I got too frustrated. I’ll be using the netbook the next few days. The hard part may be loading these entries to my website and backing up my work into Evernote and Google Drive.

    What helped today:

It was a cold rain all day today and I had a lot to do, so the rotini with sausage and vodka sauce helped. It capped off a challenging day. That, and the writing, obviously.

    What I discovered today:

Probably that there’s never going to be a perfect time to get this writing work done, and that I need to stop anticipating any. I need to schedule my writing and then be open to what all happens and working around things, I guess. I’m not thrilled about that, but I am making progress. However, I would prefer a regular time, earlier in the day.

    What else was good:

We got four-packs of yogurt for 50 cents apiece. And some of those squeezy fruit things. Not bad.

  • NaNoWriMo 2017 – Day 6

Another late night writing.  It’s a long story and work wasn’t even the issue.  But I took care of an issue that needed resolution.  It took much longer than I’d hoped and that bit deeply into my writing time.  I’m hoping I have more time tomorrow to get this work done.

    1498 words.  11313 total.

    What helped today:

Reading chapter 1 from Real Artists Don’t Starve by Jeff Goins.  It felt like he’d sat down and talked to me before writing the book.

    What I discovered today:

A lot, but I need time to process it all.  But, I will say that I very much need to examine how I look at a lot of things.  How I look at some aspects of life.

    What else was good?

    Sleep.

  • Five Things – 6 November 2017

Five things to wrap up last week:

Started pretty strong at NaNoWriMo, but tailed off towards the end of the week.  Still, I got 9815 words in.  Over five days, that’s an average of 1963 words/per day.  At that clip, I’d finish in 25 days.  So here’s to at least keeping up that clip.  Actually, here’s to working more on my more serious projects this week.

Football was up and down over the weekend.  My beloved City Knights beat the Poly Engineers in the City-Poly Game.  Unfortunately, the Knights didn’t make the 3A South region playoffs.  Terps went up to Piscataway and lost to the Rutgers Scarlet Knights.  Not at all what I was expecting.  Before the season, I’d had interest in going to this game.  I had some crazy idea about going to the City-Poly game, then either driving or taking the train to the college game.  Glad I didn’t.  And the Ravens went down to Nashville and lost a close, winnable game.  They fall to 4-5 at the bye.  Hopefully they can figure something out.  CBS’ Jason LaCanfora reported that former Ravens OC and Broncos HC, Gary Kubiak, is open to OC opportunities next season.  Maybe they’ll call him up this season for some consulting work or something.

I had the occasion to go to the Halethorpe MARC station, for what was the first time, ever.  I’ve been through there many times, as I used to commute to D.C. to work and I’ve taken Amtrak trains from D.C. to points north, many times as well.  But I’d never actually been to the station until the other day.  They really did a good job on the rebuild.  It’s an actual station now.  I remember it being a few bus shelters with a parking lot before (seemingly Maryland’s favorite way of building a train station until recently).  And to get from the northbound platform to the southbound platform, you had to climb a long flight of steps, walk along a public street, then down another flight of steps.  Now, there’s a proper walkway over the tracks.  I used to feel for those folks on rainy and snowy days.

Saw on the news that Columbia, Maryland turned 50 this past week.  There was a spot on the news, talking about the Columbia’s history, which touted Columbia’s diversity –even featuring an interview with an original Columbia resident, whose interracial marriage was accepted in Columbia in those days– but don’t let anybody talk seriously about bringing light rail out there.  There’s diversity and then there’s diversity, or so I hear.  Yet, these days you can get soul food out in one of the villages, which is more than I could say about the place when I was really ripping and running out near U.S. 29.  So, Columbia’s definitely coming up in the world.  It even has a Whole Foods on the lake and they’re starting to build sidewalks so they can become more urban, perhaps like Silver Spring.

Sent out another newsletter issue, finally.  Got some positive feedback on it, too.  Good times.

  • NaNoWriMo 2017 – Day 5

    1037 words today.  9815 total.

I didn’t feel well all day.  I got the start for the day’s essay from my morning pages, but I couldn’t get it going, really.  I just felt bad.  Not at all what I planned, as I didn’t work on my play, either.  But, I feel better now, so tomorrow will hopefully be better.

    What helped today:

    Nothing.

    What I discovered today:

    Nothing.

    What else was good?

I made a decent effort.  The best I could.

  • NaNoWriMo 2017 – Day 4

1371 words.  8778 total at this point.

I didn’t start until minutes before midnight.  The “what I have to do” that I mentioned yesterday ended up taking all day.  No complaints because I did enjoy myself, but it did also mean not settling in until long after I’d planned to.  But I did get writing done, which is the important thing.  I went for a couple of hours, taking a few breaks to try and keep my mind going.

The plan for tomorrow was to go see some of my folks, but as I said in my newsletter, I’ll probably sequester myself and write all day.

    What helped today:

    • Going in Micro Center.  I could have stayed all day.  I only got a screwdriver set to fix my Chromebook, but there were so many other things I wanted.  I liked the price on the Sandisk low-profile flash drives and next time I’m there, I’ll probably get one or two to use for my USB-based Linux installs.
    • A pep talk about my writing.  Very much needed, very much appreciated.
    • Talking about family history.  I take down as much of it as I can, but one of these days, I may need to stick recorders in front of my folks and just have them say everything they can remember.  We’ve lost a lot of people in my family over the years.

    What I discovered today:

    Nothing.

But I remembered that not journaling first thing in the morning leaves me feeling incomplete throughout the day until it’s done.

    What else was good?

I didn’t get to go, but the City Knights vanquished the Poly Engineers in the 129th City-Poly Game.  That makes six straight wins over the parrots and the all-time series is close to being tied.  City Forever.

  • NaNoWriMo 2017 – Day 3

1290 words today.  Started late again.  Long day.  I was tired and I was writing about theatre and representation in other media and it’s probably too heavy a subject to be writing about on a Friday night after a long week.  I struggled to get to 1290 and after a couple of hours, I figured it wasn’t going to get any better.  I decided to be OK with today’s output, get some rest, do what I have to do tomorrow, and then come back strong again in the afternoon or evening.  In previous years, I might have decided I had to get past 2000 words, as I had the past couple of days, or at least to 1667.  But this time around, I let myself off the hook for the night.  NaNo isn’t a sprint and it’s perfectly fine to have leaner days behind the word processor.  I can make up for today down the line, should I need to.  Hey, I should be a writing coach.

I did not write the poem today.  I have to catch up on that later, for sure.

    What helped today:

    • Deciding when to pack it in.
    • The walk I took earlier.  Helped me to decide what I wanted to write about.
    • Finding my copies of several of my favorite books on writing and theatre.  I was also able to pile them in the living room near my other books and notebooks and it wasn’t an issue.

    What I discovered today:

I enjoy playing Destiny before a writing session.

I need to buy two or three new bookshelves at some point.

    What was today’s listening?

Mostly 70’s and 80’s soul, 90’s Jazz fusion and Acid Jazz.
